Glossary of Key Terms 
  • Acquired Brain Injury (ABI): Any brain injury occurring after birth, including both traumatic and non‑traumatic causes (e.g., stroke, oxygen deprivation, infection).

  • Advocacy: Efforts to promote awareness, influence policy, and improve access to services through education, campaigns, or lobbying.

  • Alliance: A collaborative group of organizations or individuals working together to advance shared goals, often in advocacy or systems‑level change.

  • Association: A formal group (sometimes membership‑based) that provides support, education, or advocacy. May include professional associations or survivor‑led associations.

  • Caregivers: Family members, friends, or support workers who assist individuals with brain injuries in daily life, medical care, and rehabilitation.

  • Community Group: Local, often grassroots initiatives formed by or for individuals or survivors to offer support, run programs, or raise awareness.

  • Community Programs: Group or individual programs offered within the community (e.g., adaptive sports, craft groups, community walks) that foster connection and inclusion. May serve the brain injury population or the general public.

  • Concussions: A type of mild TBI caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, leading to temporary disruption of brain function. Symptoms may include headache, confusion, and memory difficulties.

  • Education: Efforts to increase knowledge about brain injury through workshops, presentations, expert talks, or school visits. Can target specific groups or the broader community.

  • Educational Resource: Programs, tools, or materials intended to provide education. May target professionals, caregivers, survivors, or the general public.

  • Foundation: A nonprofit organization that raises funds and awareness to support research, services, or community programs.

  • Government Agency: Public bodies that may fund, regulate, or deliver services or research. May include universities, ministries, or health departments.

  • Health Professionals: Trained individuals who diagnose, treat, and support people with brain injuries, including doctors, therapists (OT/PT/SLP), psychologists, nurses, and social workers.

  • Intimate Partner Violence (IPV): Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from a partner that may cause brain injury, often through repeated trauma to the head. Services specific to IPV prioritize confidentiality and safety.

  • Nonprofit: An organization operating for public benefit rather than profit. Often provides services, resources, or advocacy.

  • Organization: A broad term for any structured entity providing programs, services, education, or research.

  • Peer Support: Support groups or programs where individuals with brain injuries (and sometimes caregivers) connect with others who share similar experiences.

  • Public Policy: Influence on legislation, funding, or service delivery related to brain injury at the municipal, provincial, or national level.

  • Rehab Programs: Specialized services (e.g., physio, OT, SLP, psychology, social work) focused on recovery after brain injury. Often individualized.

  • Research: Studies focused on brain injury. May include direct participation in studies or recruitment of participants.

  • Resource Center: A place specifically focused on providing tools, information, and support materials.

  • Resources: Materials or services such as handouts, directories, or referrals to healthcare professionals that provide support or information on brain injury.

  • Society: A larger, sometimes membership‑based organization involved in advocacy, education, or professional support.

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): A brain injury caused by external physical force (e.g., fall, accident, violence). Can range from mild to severe.
