Concussion Awareness Week 2026
Last week, September 28th to October 2nd, was Concussion Awareness Week. Concussion Awareness Week is a National initiative to support concussion education and awareness across Canada. The Wednesday of Concussion Awareness Week was also Rowan's Law Day. Rowan’s Law Day, which is observed in Ontario, aims to increase concussion awareness and honours the memory of Rowan Stringer a youth rugby player from Ottawa, who passed away after sustaining subsequent concussions.
To raise concussion awareness during Concussion Awareness Week, our team supported several initiatives. The week began with a presentation by Dr. Roger Zemek for Rugby Ontario, where he discussed ways to support concussion prevention in rugby. On Rowan's Law Day, Dr. Roger Zemek presented again this time for a webinar hosted by the Coaches Association of Ontario. In this presentation, Dr. Zemek shared about the TRANSCENDENT Concussion research program and the use of biomarkers to support concussion detection and management. The week ended with a webinar co-hosted by our team and Brain Injury Canada. The webinar focused on understanding vision-related symptoms after concussion and featured TRANSCENDENT team members Dr. Kathryn Schneider and Dr. Kristine Dalton, as well as our Community Advisory Committee member Allie Harrison.
