Our team has been busy analyzing the data we are collecting as part of this research program, and we are excited to share another new TRANSCENDENT academic paper. This paper was focused on the prevalence and risk of anxiety and depression after a concussion. This is an important topic, given that anxiety and depression are associated with worse outcomes, for example, more symptoms, after a concussion.
What our team found was that the prevalence of anxiety and depression after concussions in teens (aged 13 plus) and adults is likely higher than expected. Individuals at higher risk of experiencing anxiety and depression in this study included those injured in a motor vehicle collision or at work, female patients, and those with preinjury anxiety or postinjury sleep difficulties. From a clinical perspective, this study emphasizes the importance of screening for mental health difficulties post concussion and for timely referral to mental health professionals as needed to ensure that individuals with concussions get the support that they need to help them in their recovery.
